The Rule of 72

Many investors may not have heard of the “Rule of 72.”  The Rule of 72 is a simple way to determine how long it will take an investment to double given a fixed annual interest rate. Investors can roughly estimate how long it will take for an investment to double by dividing 72 by the fixed annual interest rate. For example if an investment has a fixed interest rate of 15% per annum, then one merely divides 72/15 = 4.8. So if an investment has a fixed return of 15% per annum the value will double in approximately 4.8 years.

When dealing with low rates of return, the Rule of 72 is fairly accurate. It is only a rough guide but this rule may help in planning one’s investment strategy.
